Paper 5
The Inverted Nipple: Its Grading and Surgical Correction
Han, Sanghoon M.D.; Hong, Yoon Gi M.D. This abstract offers an interesting description of the different types of inverted nipple and the corrective options offered by plastic surgery. Han and Hong define three grades of inverted nipple (I, II, & III where III is the most severe) and explain the basic steps required to treat them.
Although this paper is written quite clearly, the text is presented within a single paragraph. The use of bold headings and more white space would certainly increase the accessibility of this piece, as would a separate paragraph for the description of each grade. Although this is just an abstract, there are notable omissions. For example, the correction of a grade III inverted nipple requires that the lactiferous ducts be cut, however no mention is made about their re-connection and therefore the effectiveness of the nipple for breast feeding.
Overall, this description is both interesting and informative and I applaud the writers for providing a clear explanation of their outstanding work. Han,

You’ll excuse me if I don’t read the paper – our discussion in class the other day was quite enough!
It’s one of those subjects that never really crosses your mind unless you suffer with it. Our bodies are prone to all kinds of maladies really, aren’t they? Possibly an arguement for the non-existance of god? Surely an infallible creator would not have made such a pigs ear of the design job.
Who said the creator was infallible, maybe he was a man after all, with a real sense of humour?
Having read the abstract, I can’t help wondering what sort of childhood these plastic surgeons had. Freud would have had a hay day with this lot.(And what about Darryl?)
Although I can see some attraction in the subject, I can’t say it is one I would want to advertise to widely!!
